What do you see?
"Not every DIY job at home requires a hammer – but when we only have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail." (Passmore. J., 2022, Succeeding as a Coach)
Passmore is talking about an integrated approach to coaching - it's a no brainer in the sports world, coaches have developed from hierarchical autocratic strategists to people managers, learning how to adapt, chameleon like, to different situations and individuals. Skills developed over time with adjustments in a leadership philosophy.
Of course, there will be a strategy you are more familiar with, a system which works for the most part and you are competent with.
A question is - how able and willing are you to flex with your system?
What happens when you start seeing every coaching relationship the same way, every situation through the same lense? You become blinkered to the possibility that there is another way. Isn't that what you are coaching? Is there anything else? What would work best for you/them?
Can we have a screw driver, a hammer, a spanner, a torque wrench, a measuring tape, batteries, drill bits etc. for any given situation? And if we don't have the right tool, there may be a mixture of tools necessary to get the job done.
It's yet another great parallel with coaching in business and in sport - you need a tool box. Fill it with lots of tools for different moments and improve the quality of the tools.
